How old is Arctic?
« on: July 21, 2017, 12:56:56 PM »
I think it would be worth having this information in a history link somewhere. How old is arctic, who were the implementors each wipe, etc.

I really can't remember when arctic came into being - I feel this information existed at one point but I don't know where to find it.

Arctic was created in March, 1992.

Go in game and type 'credits', or 'help credits' for a list of implementors. Unfortunately it won't give you a wipe-by-wipe list.

It is kind of outdated though, it was written by Fistandantilus when Flint was overlord and the game was hosted by Phred. Someone should update it!

I may be mistaken, but I don't believe Phred hosted it in the '90s, he came along much later, like mid-late 2000's.

I guess you could read Rednax post as saying, "the credits were written during the time when Phred hosted it, which would make the credits outdated..."?

Here is the relevant information I took from the credits file.

Quote
Dean and I (Dale) took over and have pretty much had creative control over
the game since that time (late 1992). Dean retired from this duty in the
latter part of 1995 and I did so early in 1996. Upon my retirement, I
handed the reins to Roger and Arctic continues to evolve under his
watchful eye.

We are currently hosted on a machine run by Will Baleson (Phred) out of
Dallas Texas.

I don't remember when I started playing Arctic, but I definitely was playing in February of 1993. I know this because I got drunk at Mardi Gras (I was at Tulane at the time), stopped by the computer center on the way from the streetcar, and proceeded to mud for almost four hours.  Somewhere during the first hour my adamatine javelin decayed, but I was too drunk to notice and kept killing merchants in Flotsam for another three hours.

Almost 25 years later there has been no significant improvement in my playing ability (although I can type recite recall faster and more accurately).

The credits file is fairly well out of date.
The basics are like this:
Overlord: Flint > Morgion > Elest > Goldmoon > Niall > Cale > Aristox > Jorquin.
Hosting: Gilean > Emyrald > Incarnadine > Lazarus > Scrappinak > Phred > Scrappinak (again!) > Loflika.

The dates vary wildly, but it is worth mentioning that for majority of time Aristox and Scrappinak have handled both duties for us all.

I remember the game under Morgion. The number of us abusing the criminal justice system was insane. First and only tims I'd ever been abyssed. By Goldmoon of all people.

I'm not trying to change the mud, I'm just trying to give it a better kender.
